CathARTic - Easy Doodle Tutorial 002

Updated: Dec 4, 2022

According to a psychoanalytic theory, Catharsis is an emotional release that leads to relieving unconscious conflicts. To exemplify, if you are experiencing work-related stress it may cause feelings of frustration and tension. Rather than venting these emotions inappropriately, an individual may instead release these feelings in another way, such as through physical or a mindful activity.

Anxiety, fear, anger, stress and trauma can cause intense and difficult feelings to build over time. The emotion and turmoil may become overwhelming for some and lead to a feeling that the individual is going to "explode" unless he/she finds a way to release the pent-up emotion.

Art is considered by many as Therapeutic. And can act as a mindful activity to release pent-up emotions in a creative and focused way. Zentangles in particular are a Meditative Art Form that improve concentration and creativity while at the same time improving personal well-being.

A Zentangle is an easy-to-learn, relaxing, and fun way to create beautiful images by drawing structured patterns. These patterns are called tangles. You create tangles with combinations of dots, lines, simple curves, S-curves and orbs.

The reason this series is called CathARTic is because we are using simple zentangles and doodles as a therapeutic medium to bring about a cathartic release of emotions for you all.

So let’s get going with this #catharticchallenge. Tag me on my Instagram handle @sugar.by.surbhi if you try this out.

Material used Brustro A6 drawing sheets and Brustro Professional Fineliner Pens (0.5). However, you can use simple drawing/A4 size sheets and any pencils/pens/colour pens at your disposal to complete this.
